Forge vs Fabric: Which Mod Loader Should You Choose?

Published June 20, 2026 By CraftLauncher

What is a mod loader?

A mod loader is a piece of middleware that lets Minecraft load modifications (mods) created by the community. Without a mod loader, Minecraft can't read mod .jar files. It's the first technical choice you have to make when setting up a launcher.

The two main mod loaders in 2026 are Forge and Fabric. Each has its strengths and weaknesses, and the right choice depends on your use case.

Forge: the historic standard

Minecraft Forge has been around since 2011 and remains the most popular mod loader. It offers proven stability and maximum compatibility with major modpacks. If your server runs hundreds of mods or a complex modpack, Forge is often the safest choice.

Strengths

  • Massive ecosystem: over 10,000 mods available
  • Support for major modpacks (RLCraft, All The Mods, FTB)
  • Mature, well-documented API

Weaknesses

  • Slower startup
  • Higher memory usage
  • Slower to update for new Minecraft versions

Fabric: the new generation

Fabric is a newer mod loader, built to be lightweight and fast. It has become extremely popular thanks to performance mods like Sodium, Lithium, and Iris. If your goal is to optimize Minecraft's performance while adding features, Fabric is the ideal choice.

Strengths

  • Ultra-fast startup and lightweight footprint
  • Best performance mods (Sodium, Lithium, Iris)
  • Fast updates for new Minecraft versions

Weaknesses

  • Fewer complex mods than Forge
  • Some major modpacks unavailable

Which one should you choose for your server?

Choose Forge if:

  • You use a heavy modpack (RLCraft, ATM, FTB)
  • You need specific mods only available on Forge
  • You run a server with lots of complex features

Choose Fabric if:

  • Performance is your priority
  • You want Iris shaders and Sodium optimizations
  • You keep up with the latest Minecraft versions
